The Simon Goss Tribute Fund

"Bloody hell love, I don't have to learn to play the trumpet now I've got lung cancer, do I?"

The above was a quip made by my husband Simon in response to my telling him I'd found some useful information on the Roy Castle website

Simon's battle with lung cancer was almost over by the time we knew he had the disease; he lived for only 10 weeks after his diagnosis, aged just 44. His positivity through those last few weeks of his life was astounding, and he remained the wonderful, funny and rock-solidman we had always known and relied upon.

On behalf of Patti, Chris, Tom, Joe, Brian and Zena, we thank you for any contribution you can make to Simon's Tribute fund, and we passionately hope that money raised will ultimately lead to better screening and earlier diagnostic tools, as well as treatments for lungcancer, which will prevent other families going through the devastation and heartache we feel at losing him.

Wah Wah 45s Family raised £4,038.00 at The Jazz Cafe on 25th March for Simon. A truly special night. X

She Said!

I'm Tom's girlfriend Mina, and as I'm sure anyone reading will know, Tom is lead guitarist with Plan B. The last niight of Plan B's UK tour 2010 was at Liverpool University Student Union, significant beacuse Liverpool is Patti's home town and a place that Simon loved (and had great success record shopping!), and also because Liverpool is the home of the Roy Castle Foundation, with whom we have set up Simon's Tribute Fund.
I had a lovely night and it was a fitting night for an end show. The band played with high energy (as usual) and the audience loved it!
It's always wonderful seeing Tom on stage, especially as Plan B's doing so well. I plucked up the courage to shove my way through to the front so that I could get a clear view of him. Four lovely people from Roy Castle were collecting for the Foundation that night, so Ben told the audience that Tom's Dad had passed away from lung cancer and that the album "The Defamation of Strickland Banks" was dedicated to Simon, to raise awareness of the disease and how it can affect anyone. It was so moving because I know how much Simon would've loved to have seen Tom touring the UK and the album doing so well. He was so proud of Tom but unfortunately didn't get to see the reception the album received. Anyway, this announcement really helped boost the funds! As I stood outside the doors of the venue, pretty much everybody put something into the buckets which was brilliant to see. It was also lovely that Tom and I were able to meet Joanna and her colleagues for the first time, who worked so hard that night, carrying those heavy buckets of money in the cold!

xx

A year without you....

Darling, I'm completely baffled as to how we have managed to live a year without you. It seems like only a heartbeat since we were all together, but it's also been the longest and toughest year of our lives.

We miss you desperately, but your presence and influence is a crucial part of our day to day. I hear your voice as you have watched Joe and Tom grow up so much this year, and celebrated their triumphs; ranted royally about the "Demolition" Government, raised a glass to the England Team on the Ashes victory, drowned our sorrows on the fortunes of West Ham and Liverpool and pulled a few strings to get Plan B to number 1!!

You know I could go on and on (you know I still do!!) But your legacy is wonderful and all of the love and the time and the care that you gave, personally and professionally, has come back to Tom, Joe and I, to Mina, Brian and Zena and to Chris and Sally, manyfold over the last 12 months. You live on in our thoughts, our actions and our aspirations and that will never change. We love you and carry you with us, always.
Your Patti

The last time I saw Simon before I and he knew he was ill was in Camden town. I was waiting for my wife. I was in a fowl mood, bad day at work. His smiling face appeared out of the gloom as be bent down to kiss me. The warmth of his greeting vanquished by awful mood and off he went to DJ at the Jazz Cafe. That's who Simon was, the man who could change your mood in a few moments. I saw him a couple of times a year but I miss him a lot.

A chance e-mail has just shed the most shocking news; I worked with Simon in Haringey 1999/2000, we shared sausage sandwiches in greasy spoons desguised as supervision sessions from which he would pen beautiful notes of encouragement. Last time I spoke to him, he was working part time to give more time to Tom and Joe, for the guidance he said he thought they needed through school, which I guess sums up someone who knew what his priorities were. I was recently bought the Plan b album for my birthday, and its been played to death in my car.....it appears the guidance was well judged! i can't imagine the pain and loss, but good luck in keeping his memory alive. xx
